LO1 - Game analysis form - Halo 5
The genre of Halo 5 is a first person shooter. It shows conventions of the genre as the combat its from the perspective of the character you are playing. Compared to other games within the genre Halo 5 fits in well within its respective genre as the combat is very fluid and the game runs smoothly on the Xbox one making for a fun experience compared to other FPS games such as Call of duty or battlefield.
The story of Halo 5 is that master chief goes to look for his A.I Cortana with the help of his team (blue team). Then agent Locke is tasked with hunting him down with fireteam Osiris. The story informs the gameplay by making it relevant to the situation you are in, if the story is hectic then the gameplay in response will be hectic for the player. The story does not do that good of a job with making the characters interactable and interesting. The story connects to its target audience by making it action packed and interesting.
This game was produced on 343s brand new game engine (they do not state the name of this engine). Some of the game engines features are used to enhance gameplay such as making features new to the franchise such as the use of boosts and ground pounds. A specific part of the game that will have been enhanced will have been the multiplayer, as they will have tried to incorporate new features and maps to keep Halos multiplayer new and fun. Gameplay mechanics will managed so major bugs or overpowered weapons or ability’s will be fixed before the game launches to make the experience enjoyable.
The characters are relevant to the target audience because one character has been the main character in past halo games (master chief). The characters do not have much appeal other than chief as we do not have enough time to get to know them there character traits and personalities are rather bland and are very forgettable. They match conventions of the genre, as most of the main characters are soldiers which are very common Only one character feels strong (master chief) but the player does not get many missions to play as master chief.
The challenge in the game is the enemies as they can vary in their abilities and how strong they are as some can be very fast but weak such as the crawler or can be slow but extremely tough such as the hunter. It engages the players, as they can be a prominent challenge to the player and makes them want to carry on. The gunplay and abilities is key to the gameplay as these are what allow the player to have fun while playing the game. The gameplay engages with the narrative as it can vary as to what is happening within the story. The gameplay gradually gets harder as the enemies become harder to kill and make the levels more challenging for the player.
I believe that the target audience is sci-fi and first person shooter fans as this game delivers on both of these aspects. There are indicators of this as the game is from the characters point of view and includes many sci-fi elements. The game is fun to play in the first person view and the futuristic technology adds depth to the level design and the narrative. The game delivers well on these aspects when compared to other similar games such as titanfall and gears of war.
The game is available on the Xbox one. It is suited to this platform as it is optimized specifically for the Xbox one. The game feels good on the Xbox one as the controls are made to be used with a controller.
